I have always been sensitive to sound, loved the way vinyl felt on a turntable, and have had a great curiosity for the way a room sounded. I’ve played music with many groups in many rooms, and I am intrigued how the same ensemble can sound so different in different spaces. 

When I heard about the Architectural Acoustics program at Peabody, a lightbulb went off that this was what I always wanted to learn. I began my career as an AV consultant, then shifted over to representing electronics manufacturers, had a brief stint experiencing the life of an AV contractor, and am now back full-circle as an AV consultant.

A big shift of my career focus happened as the result of COVID-19. Social distancing required us all to use our mini AV systems to carry on with business: webcams and laptops, and Zoom and Teams and alllllll the other platforms.  The reliance on these mini systems allowed us to squeak by with our business, all the while permanently changing the way we get work done.

The big guns that are Microsoft and Zoom took it upon themselves to standardize the user experience in order to scale and support this new video-centric world.  In a small amount of time, the typical video-enabled room went from complicated custom code solutions to a more standard user interface and certified packaged system approach. While the hardware has been simplified, there still remains a need for thoughtful architectural integration of AV systems, and that’s where I fit in. I am also an advocate for a newer category of technology: “workplace management solutions”. This includes desk booking, visitor management systems, and digital signage.  Add in soundscapes, sound masking, and intentional acoustics, and you have an elevated workplace environment.
